Offered at Seimei Shrine, Kyoto
Seimei Shrine is a Shinto shrine founded in 1007 at the site of Abe no Seimei’s mansion. Abe no Seimei was an onmyōji (specialist in magic and divination) and astrologer for emperors and the Heian government. He lived a long life, 84 years, free from any major illness, contributing to the popular belief that he had mystical powers. The pentacle, known locally as a Seimei-star, is an important symbol found on many parts of the shrine. Abe no Seimei reputedly came up with the arcane insignia in the 10th century, symbolizing the Five Chinese Elements.
